News: Hellen Systems and Hoptroff Partner to Deliver e-LORAN Solution in the UK

The collaboration between Hellen Systems and Hoptroff addresses the challenges with GPS and GNSS vulnerabilities for critical infrastructure:

  • As reliance on GNSS increases across industries, there is increased exposure to jamming, spoofing, solar flares, and the intentional and non-intentional damage of satellites.

  • e-LORAN offers a resilient and independent alternative to satellite-based positioning, navigation and timing.

London, 4th February - Hellen Systems, a leader in resilient positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) solutions, has partnered with Hoptroff, the UK’s traceable time synchronisation technology provider, to launch the first commercial e-LORAN service in the UK.

First developed during WWII, LORAN, or Long Range Navigation, was used to guide ships and aircraft over long distances. The radio navigation system was later replaced by GPS technology in the 1990s.

As reliance on GPS and GNSS has since increased across various industries, vulnerabilities to jamming, spoofing, and other disruptions have also grown. These security and continuity concerns have created demand for an enhanced LORAN system, or e-LORAN, to offer robust, high-precision PNT services to support critical infrastructure, including telecommunications, energy, transportation, and financial services.

e-LORAN is an independent and distinct compliment to GPS and GNSS. It enables users to maintain the safety, security, and economic advantages of GNSS whilst providing resilience during disruptions to satellite services. There are no shared failure modes between e-LORAN and GNSS, which means that a disruption affecting one system will not impact the other.

This strategic collaboration sees Hellen Systems incorporate Hoptroff’s precision timing technology to validate time distribution over e-LORAN, ensuring it is both traceable and accurate.

“We are excited to partner with Hoptroff to bring their capabilities and skills to our e-LORAN service to support all users across the UK market,”said Bridge Littleton, President at Hellen Systems. “This partnership represents a significant step forward in safeguarding the UK’s critical systems and ensuring continuity of services in the face of growing threats to GNSS.”

Hoptroff CEO, Tim Richards, added:

“This collaboration is a game-changer for the UK. By integrating e-LORAN with Hoptroff’s traceable time synchronisation technology, we can deliver unparalleled reliability and accuracy to industries that rely on precise timing and positioning.”
